How to apply to engineering colleges in India

From entrance exams to seat allotment — here is the big picture, explained simply.

The 4 main routes

Which exam leads where?

IITs → JEE Advanced

Qualify JEE Main first, then clear JEE Advanced. Seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling across all 23 IITs.

NITs, IIITs, GFTIs → JEE Main

A single JEE Main score feeds JoSAA & CSAB counselling for NITs, IIITs and centrally-funded institutes.

State colleges → State CET

State engineering colleges admit via state common entrance tests and home-state counselling boards.

Deemed & Private → Institute exams

Universities like BITS, VIT, SRM and others run their own tests (BITSAT, VITEEE, SRMJEEE) with separate counselling.

Step by step

The typical journey

1
Register for the entrance exam
Create your account on the official exam portal (e.g. NTA for JEE) and fill the application within the window.
2

Sit the exam, then check your score and All-India Rank when results are declared.
3
Fill choices in counselling
List your preferred colleges and branches in order during JoSAA / CSAB / state counselling.
4
Accept & report
Once a seat is allotted, pay the acceptance fee, verify documents and report to the institute.
